The peak accelerations in the world vertical plane as the foot leaves the ground. Vertical Takeoff Acceleration (VTA) is calculated for every step, and is a means of quantifying strategy used to push off the ground.

Note that VTA is different from the z-axis signal, because the z-axis changes orientation as the foot moves through space. VTA is purely up and down.
